I created a few question boxes on Instagram so that I could make my characters as relatable as possible. Since every answer I received was from people between the ages of 16 and 24 (my target age range) it will allow me to use the answers given to relate more to my audience and correctly portray my character's reactions as the average person in that age range would do so. I considered creating a short survey as well to ask further questions, however I decided not to since I think I have gathered all of the information that I may need for my initial idea. Unfortunately, my friends that I have in mind to play my characters did not answer any of the Instagram questions, however I intend to gather their responses at some point so that it may be easier for them to get into character and portray the emotions correctly.

Secondary Research

Since a main theme in my video will be the loss of a loved one, I decided to do some research on how most people cope with loss. A key point in my video will be when my main character learns to cope with a loss, and I thought that researching it beforehand would allow me to portray it in a more accurate way. I learnt, after looking online, that every person deals with loss and grief in very different ways, and there is no "right" way to handle these types of situations, however I thought that to make the message of my video very clear, I would have my character react in the way that is considered "most common".

I decided to research what age people usually fall in love, since the actors I have in mind for my film are 18, and I was a little worried that it would not be taken as a serious romance with a devastating ending based on their ages. After reading through this forum I found online, I discovered that most of the commenters involved said that they first fell in love between the ages of 14 - 22, which made me feel a lot more confident in my choices, and realised that many of the older people who see my project will be able to relate to it and maybe feel some nostalgia.

Since I already know that I want my video to be of the romance genre, I began coming up with ideas on shots that I could use. I struggled with this a little since I don't know all that much about romance, so I watched this video to give me a better idea of what type of thing romance fans like to see.

To help me come up with ideas for romantic shots to use in my project, I visited this website for ideas and made a note of which activities I could incorporate.

Song Research

The song that I am going to be using in my music video is When You Leave by Maps. I chose this song due to the sort of melancholy vibe it has, as well as the lyrics, which I interpreted in a way that fit my idea perfectly. Since this song's lyrics consists entirely of "When you leave, I ain't coming. What you have, comes to nothing" repeated multiple times, I realised that it fit my story rather well in the sense of my main character's partner leaving, her not being able to go with him, and then feeling like her life has essentially "come to nothing". Since I will be downloading this song, I will have to attempt to contact somebody for the permission to use this song, which I will then include in my portfolio.

I discovered this song while watching the television series Skins (S3E8), where it is used as the episode comes to an end, with the two characters running away, leaving their lives behind in a stolen car in the middle of the night. This scene inspired a little bit of my project idea, since I thought it was so powerful and equally as calming as it was depressing.
